The simple rule
Bins split into two families. Equipment you handle — indoor stations, deskside bins, slim containers, wheeled carts — is bought from equipment sellers and lasts years. Equipment a truck handles — front-load bins, roll-offs, compactors on a container — usually belongs to the hauler and comes with the service.
So the real question is only about carts and, for bigger operations, balers and compactors.
Carts: why owning often wins
- No monthly rental line. A cart costs a one-time amount; rental is charged every month the contract runs.
- Freedom to switch. When the cart is yours, changing haulers doesn't mean losing your bins or waiting for new ones.
- Your colours, your labels. You decide the lid colour and signage, which helps keep recycling clean.
The catch: check your hauler will empty a cart you bought elsewhere, and that it fits their lift. Ask before you order.
When renting makes sense
- You're on a short lease or a trial and don't want to own equipment.
- The hauler includes carts at no extra charge — then there is nothing to save by buying.
- You need cart washing or swap-outs (common for organics).
Balers and compactors: buy, lease or rent
These are the expensive ones. Buying suits steady volume over many years. Leasing spreads the cost and often bundles maintenance. Renting covers seasonal peaks. Ask for all three prices in one request and compare the total over the same number of years.
How to compare fairly
Add up the full cost over the contract term: equipment, rental lines, delivery, and the service itself. A low monthly service price with a high bin-rental line can cost more than the opposite. The comparison page shows published equipment prices; a quote request gets you the service side.
Common questions
Do haulers charge rent for recycling bins?
Some do as a separate line, others include the bin in the service price. Ask for an itemised quote so you can see it.
Will a hauler empty a cart I bought myself?
Usually, if it is a standard size with the right lift bar. Confirm before buying — especially for locks and smaller carts.
