Indoor recycling stations
Most contamination happens indoors, at the point where someone decides which hole to use. Good indoor bins — matched openings, colours and labels — keep the outdoor bin clean.

Which size?
Match the indoor system to what your hauler accepts. If your hauler takes mixed containers, a two-stream station (paper / containers) beats a four-stream one nobody understands.
| Size | Holds roughly | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Deskside (≈7–28 qt) | A day of paper at one desk | Offices, reception |
| Slim container (≈23 gal / 87 L) | A busy corridor or kitchen | Restaurants, clinics, back rooms |
| 2-stream station | Paper + containers | Office kitchens, lobbies |
| 3–4 stream station | Adds organics and garbage | Cafeterias, food courts, schools |
Before you sign anything
Copy what your hauler collects. Your indoor streams should line up with your outdoor bins and your hauler's accepted-materials list.
Restrict the openings. Round holes for bottles and cans, slots for paper. Shaped openings do more than signs.
Put garbage beside recycling. A recycling bin standing alone becomes a garbage bin. Every station should include a garbage option.
Ask for: unit price, label options, lid colours, fire rating if it is going in a corridor, and volume discounts.
Suppliers listed for this bin type: Busch Systems, Uline Canada, Facility Supply Pro.
Questions people ask
How many recycling stations does an office need?
Put one station wherever people throw things away — kitchens, print areas, entrances — and remove lone garbage cans. Deskside bins can then empty into those stations.
Are indoor recycling bins bought or rented?
Bought. They are a one-time purchase from equipment sellers, not part of a hauling contract.
What colour should recycling bins be?
Blue for recycling, green for organics and black or grey for garbage is the most common convention in Canada. Match your hauler and municipality where you can.
